Hey New York people:

This evening I'll be seeing a musical. I need someplace to eat! Do you have any suggestions? I'm afraid that if we wander aimlessly between Penn Station and the theater (I think it's on 44th St.) we'll end up someplace touristy and overpriced. And I am a tourist, so I suppose that's just, but you know. Help a brother out?

I think it's probably pretty hard not to eat someplace touristy and overpriced, in that area. If you just kinda want to eat a bite of something, there are delis in times square, like on broadway around 47th, i think? They'er probably still overpriced, but better than the ESPN cafe or whatever.

Someplace not exactly in that area, then? I want to sit down.

I remember when I worked at Amtrak there was a Chinese place near Penn Station, but we were too muddy and dirty so we didn't go in.

Leaving the area is fine! I don't mind leaving the area. I just want to have a destination in mind.

Not French. Not seafood-only. I've already got an Indian rec, so something else?

Hmmm, you have the greatest burger ever at McHales 46th and 8th...

Amazing brazilian steak house at Churrascaria Plataforma 49th above 8th

Decent Mexican at Mi Nidito 51st and 8th

Blue Fin in the W Times Square is nice...

For hard-core boozing, the russian vodka room is awesome.

Let me know what you're looking for and I'll rack my brain again. I used to work in the area.

I like steak!

I want to sit down and have a nice dinner. Not super-duper expensive or romantic or anything, but this is my birthday evening, so I want something classy. I'm a classy broad.

If no one has any other suggestions, that Brazilian steak place sounds good. Will dinner take more than two hours? And THANK YOU for a useful answer, jeez! These other clowns were no help at all.

Like I said above, I don't mind going to another area and coming back again -- I just don't want to wander aimlessly. I'm not good at making decisions.

Oh, if you want classy (and, again with the Indian food), Bombay Palace is AWESOME. They have some of the best Indian food I've ever eaten.

Awesome, thank you for the tip! I think I've only had Indian, like, once! If I decide the steakhouse is too much, this is next on the list.

If you like steak, I HIGHLY recommend Churrascaria Plataforma. It's pricey, but not ridiculously so.. The drinks are good as well, but pricey.

I've been there a half dozen times and always love it.

This is leading the pack. I don't mind spending money, I just don't want to spend money on the goddamned Hard Rock Cafe, you know?

Again, thanks for the tips, my man! [PS GO BIRDS.]

Eating churrascaria is a blast. The only problem is that by the time dinner is over, you're usually completely incapacitated and need a forklift to get to your car. Meat paralysis, I think, is the technical term.

Let me know if you want to hang afterwards or something! I'm looking into an answer for you. I know a pretty neat lounge/bar place, but food really DOES get touristy and expensive.

if you don't mind the walk, there's a place on 9th Ave between 37th and 38th that is way, way nice, called the Market Cafe. it's "moderately" priced, which of course means "cheaper than what you'd pay in Times Square, but this ain't no Applebees." they have Tahitian vanilla milkshakes!!

also, there's a place called Eatery, also on 9th Ave, but further north, at 53rd St, where I had one of the best burgers of my life. Website here.

Have fun, man!

The last two shows I attended, I ate at an EXTREMELY overpriced "Jewish" deli and a pizza shop. Both places were underwhelming.

But! If you don't mind moving a little bit out of the area, there are several great Indian places around (which is what I always seem to hit for lunch when I go out). Baluchi's wins points with me.

I am no help regarding the food, but have a ton of fun at the show! I haven't seen it yet and I am jealous of you!
