A little help?

So I'm trying to make a graphic here, and I'm putting some text on it. How do I get the text to be all feathery at the edges, and not pixellated? I'm using Adobe PhotoDeluxe, which admittedly is not the best program in the world, but it does a lot of stuff and I would think that it would handle it. But you can't seem to mess with the text too much. Like, if I have the text box selected, and then go to the Feather tool (which I'm not even sure is the correct thing to do), it selects the entire image, which indicates to me I'm not allowed to Feather text.

Is it in the font, or the graphic editing program? I have Fireworks at home; how can I do it there? I'm totally clueless as to even the theory behind it all, so even a quick lecture on that would be helpful; I understand things better if I know how they work. Is it a Feather that I'm really looking for, or something else?

Thanks in advance for the advice. I hope you can even figure out what I'm asking . . .

You may just need to merge the text into the actual image before you can do any blending of edges... Generally, it's just a matter of right-clicking on selected text and telling it to merge, but you can rest assured there are hostile forces at work trying to complicate the matter.

I'm not familiar with that program particularly, but on most graphics programs, the text-editor box has an option to switch between Aliased and Anti-Aliased text. And you'll want the text anti-aliased.

Also, is the image you're putting the text on 16 million colors, or an indexed image? Cause indexed (gif, png) images will mean pixelly text, in most programs ...

Outside'a of that, I would need to know more about the program. Inside of that, it's too dark to read.

like you, my child, i have used adobe photodeluxe.
I know what you're trying to say. I've worked with photodeluxe before I've worked with photoshop. The wiggy thing about the text (and it's been a while, so forgive me if I'm wrong) is that when you save it and look at it in a viewer, it should be softer anti-aliased text automatically. If you are</a> actually trying to soften the edges of the text, (not anti-aliasing), I'm not sure if theres a 'render text' option in there, but look for something close to that. Text in adobe programs have to be turned to graphics before they are editable.

man, i hope that wasn't too confusing.

Re: oops
By gum, you stand behind anti-aliasing in full effect! Good for you!

boy, i be OLDER than you.
Yes you are sorta right!</a> Now HERE'S the wiggy part: I have two text boxes on the image. One of them antialiases just fine, like it's s'posed to; but the other doesn't. Damnit. The one that isn't being nice is at 72 pt, so maybe it's too big? Or maybe the font is stupid? Or maybe . . . that's all I got.

It's not ACTUALLY work-related, though, so I'm going to try not to screw around with it any further until after 4:45, at which point I will do a little experimentation and see if I can figure it out.

Thank you all for the help, gentlemen.

oops squared
Oh man, I totally didn't do that on purpose. I meant to unbold after the first sentence. Man.

could be...
The anti-aliasing can do some magic, but if a font can only go up to a certain point size, anti-aliasing can't do jack. The font could be stupid too. Photodeluxe looks to have no other features I can suggest, but it looks better after saved. Good luck on that and sorry I haven't sent the mix CD, everything is crazy-go-nuts over here...

Re: could be...
Yeah, that was probably it, then. And it is totally a pain in the ass to save shit as a jpeg first and THEN go look at it to see how it turned out, but whaddaya gonna do. It's all I got here at work.

But it's all good, 'cuz I was working at 850x850 for what's ostensibly an album cover, and that's bigger than necessary, and at 425x425 (or smaller) it looks totally fine.

And no sweat about the cd, yo -- I actually made yours (and mine is a far easier task), but whilst prooflistening I noticed a skip on Track 16, and I said "aaarrrrgh!" and haven't gotten around to fixing it. I'll get to it eventually. I think.
