Boy do I miss the Bene Gesserit

God Emperor of Dune, p. 407:

"Love of my soul, I have captured another of your secrets."

"Release it from your lips," he said, joking in this new intimacy between them.

"You seldom need words," she said. "You speak directly to the senses with your own life."

A shudder flexed its way through the length of his body. It was a moment before he could speak and then it was in a voice she had to strain to hear above the hubbub of the assembling cortege.

"Between the superhuman and the inhuman," he said, "I have had little space in which to be human. I thank you, gentle and lovely Hwi, for this little space."

...

What? "You speak directly to the senses with your own life"? What the hell does that mean? Shut up! BRING ON THE NEXT BOOK! Jesus.

Man, Jeff, I can't believe this is your favorite one. You must be way more smarter than me than I had thought.

Okay okay, so now that I've written a freaking entry about it and have read it ten times, I get what she's saying. That his actions speak more loudly than his words. Mine would too if I were 3,500 years old. Oh wait they do anyway, because ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS. I mean come on, 423 pages of this? I'm pretty sure he's saying the same things over and over and over and over again, but it's kind of hard to tell, because I'm not paying too much attention.

Man, that TOTALLY is amazing! I'm linking to it so that I can later find it more easily and again be astounded that we were both rolling our eyes at the same crap at the same time, states away.

You couldn't devise a more sure way to get me to skip the next two books*, and catch up with you. Cutting you off at the pass, so to speak. Is that illegal, by the rules?

* Well maybe I'll just read the part in GEoD where Idaho climbs the wall and fucks shit up. That isn't so boring.

absolutely. but i think that's unrelated. i'll be able to give you a better explanation after i finish of why it's my favorite, when it's again fresh in my mind. but a big part of it is lines like "You speak directly to the senses with your own life." i'm a sucker for shit like that. and in reality, i enjoyed the last book best, & it would probably be my favorite, except for that damned ending. it just kills me.

And what does this have to do with His humanity (or lack thereof)? Sounds to me like she's just flirting with him... I guess "Your actions speak louder than your words" is an appropriate translation, although I think the subtext is closer to "I want to suck your sandtrout".

Alternately, it may be that he feels almost as if he's talking to an equal, because Hwi's insight into his actions is so accurate. I remember very little from this book, and almost nothing about Hwi.

Yeah, I definitely agree with that, though the question then becomes, what's the big deal with what she said?

A lot of the book (and heck, the whole series) does this thing that bothers me: like, in some places, someone will say something, and another person will be positively SHAKEN at their insight, and I'm left thinking, "wha?" It's totally over my head. And then OTHER times, some person who is thousands of generations in our future, and bred and trained for intelligence and observational and logic skills, will have some sort of epiphany, and I'll be like, "yeah, no shit, asshole. I knew that twenty pages ago. THAT'S a revelation?" You know? Inconsistent.

You didn't remember anything because there's nothing TO remember. Seriously. Though Hwi sounds really pretty, and she wears cool gowns, and I like saying her name. Hwi. Hwi. Hwi. That's about it for her, though.

Oh, and "I want to suck your sandtrout"? Nice. Also, ew.
