Last night Mitch and I were in his kitchen flipping channels on the tiny tv and he stopped on the Game Show Network and said "is this the Gong Show?" and I said "maybe," because I had never seen it before and neither had he but he was right. So the guy introduced the next act which was "Betty and Eddie" who did sound effects. Betty looked like the lead singer of The Squirrel Nut Zippers. That is, I don't think she was (though I sure as hell don't remember her face, it COULD have been) but you know, same haircut, kind of masculine looking, fifties-whatever dress, animated. Eddie had big round glasses, and thick, too. Suspenders. Big red flower. Frizzy hair.
Betty and Eddie started doing their act, which was sound effects. They would announce a subject and then do some noises and yelling and stuff. I don't remember it too well because I couldn't concentrate because after about 30 seconds or so I said "that's Paul Reubens."
It was Paul Reubens. Mitch was skeptical at first and so was I, but goddamn, that was Paul Reubens. I have never seen such early footage of him. One could recognize his voice every once in a while. It was Paul Reubens! On the Gong Show! In the year of our lord nineteen seventy something! They did some dorky piece and got a perfect score and then they WON, they won the Gong Show! Paul Reubens!
It was the happiest moment of my life.
Oh man I just googled it and found a pic. I don't want to embed it or steal it BECAUSE I'M NOT THAT KIND OF GIRL so here's a link -- it's on the right, nearish the bottom of the page. Also I just found an article in which he says that he was on the Gong Show a bunch of times, and actually supporting himself for a while doing that. Amazing.
OH MAN I just found a much better link but I'm going to keep that other one up because it's weird, especially when she calls a 22-year-old Paul "succulent" because I just think he looks grimy in that pic. ANYWAY, go here and go down to the bottom to It's The Gong Show Gallery Two! and there are two pics of him. Man you guys. Don't you wish you had seen that with me? I mean LOOK at him! Amazing.
Man, also check out Alice Cooper.
