THE FUTURE IS NOW, BABY!

THE FUTURE IS NOW, BABY!!

Is he 'The Invisible Man' by H.G. Wells? It looks like as if three men walking behind are seen through the body of graduate student Kazutoshi Obana during a demonstration of optical camouflage technology at the Tokyo University in Tokyo Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003. The demonstration conducted by Faculty of Engineering Prof. Susumu Tachi is an early stage of his research that will eventually enable camouflaged objects virtually transparent by wearing an optical device. This photo was taken through a viewfinder that provides with a combined image of moving images taken behind Obana and him wearing a luminous jacket that makes a transparent effect. The technology can be useful for various professions such as surgeons who wish their own fingers and surgical tools won't block the view of affected parts and pilots who wish cockpit floors were transparent for landings. (AP Photo/Shizuo Kambayashi)

Although, you know, maybe not really. What does This photo was taken through a viewfinder that provides with a combined image of moving images taken behind Obana and him wearing a luminous jacket that makes a transparent effect mean? Does that mean the camera that took the picture is combining moving images with the images on the jacket? Because that would sort of be bullshit. Or are they just talking about the garment itself, and not the camera of the AP person? That would be okay, then. That sentence isn't very clear, wow, big surprise on a wire service.

BUT STILL!! NEUROMANCER IN THE HIZZOUSE!! And I guess The Invisible Man as well, though I never read that. And I wouldn't be surprised if The Invisible Man isn't about anything like this, and they're only referring to the TITLE.

Oh, and also I like how they're like "yeah, it'll be great for surgeons and pilots" but don't mention, say, assassins.

This is basically a live blue screen effect, image is being projected onto the colors of the jacket, which the camera is cued to ignore/overlay with the other feed, so when you look through the viewfinder, the jacket appears to be transparent.

As cool as it would be to be shooting straight off the camera that would be presumably mounted on the back of the wearer, that's not the case.

But it could be, right? If it's taking it from another arbitrary feed, there's no reason it couldn't be mounted to this dude's back, right? I'm just trying to make sure I understand what's going on here.

Well, it could be, only you would need a pretty crazy set of lenticular prisims on all of the cameras/feeds so that no matter what angle you were looking at the person, you would be seeing what was on the other side of them, not just a projection of whatever was on the opposite side of the camera.

Ideally, you'd need a fabric that was composed of a fast reacting yet flexible display (Organic LEDs? A tech based off of the camoflage that octopi use maybe?) combined with a sensor array that can scan who/what is looking at you and camoflage accordingly.

The real trick is to get it working in 360 degrees both horizontally AND vertically, otherwise you are limited to a set field of view that you are "hiding" from, which makes it really obvios when you are seen from off-axis.

Sorry to go on so long Washu, this is one of those things I love to think/talk about.

Well, I note here, in case you've never seen it (they had footage of it a few years back on one of those Discovery Channelian programs) a camouflage that did basically what you described above; a net of fibre-optics covered the suit, broadcasting the stuff behind the soldier to the front of him. The effect was obvious close-up, what with distortions from him bending and what all, but from a distance, he really did look like the Predator.

I'm still waiting for the "Electric Blanket-Coat" that keeps you warm in winter.

you'd think they would iron their new fancy see-through jacket before the news photo. this girl looks like she was just sleeping on the steps next to her...or the projection of the steps next her. i can't tell what's real.

D00D WHEN R THEY GONA MAKE XRAY CLOTHES SO I CAN SEE CHICKS NAYKED?

I think it's pretty sketchy that they didn't mention the military too. I mean, it's so obvious! Surgeons don't wear camo!
