Oh man good news good news!

You guys, I totally got a raise today! And it was pretty big! HOORAY!! Now I don't feel so badly for blowing a hundred bucks on Star Trek shit today that I totally don't need and will only make me less cool!

Also I got a gmail account because I am totally awesome and elite! geniusscientist at! Thanks be to Elemak of the Slick Ninja BBS!

Also also Bonnaroo was totally spectacular! It was amazing! I saw a lot of great music! I should have seen more! I hung out with three great guys for five days and we did not kill each other! I miraculously did not take any drugs! And most wonderfully of all, I DID NOT GET SUNBURNED!! Huzzah! More on all of that later, of course.

I leave for Germany to see my awesome brother in, like, three days! Holy shit! I have to pack or something!

All of this good news makes me so happy that I do not mind that I am still here at work! See you later, suckers!

Too cool, too cool. Going places, seeing people, making money...and most importantly, spending serious bank on SF merchandise.

Awesome. High fives.

congrats on the raise.
also, g-mail is for suckers. did you know that they scan all of your e-mails and pick out key words that they use to shoot advertisements and pop-ups your way? yeah. g-mail is totally for suckers. yahoo has just raised their email limit to 100MB and i haven't seen any foul play as of yet, but you never know. SCREW GOOGLE!

1.) They do not use or promote pop-ups. That is a blatant lie.

2.) They do use targeted keyword advertising and use small, text-based ads on the side of the page. It doesn't happen every message. Compare this with Yahoo!'s waste of bandwidth on static and flash ads. Fuck Yahoo!.

a screen shot of my average Yahoo! inbox with screaming flash advertisement for some Nokia phones I don't give a shit about and didn't want to waste bandwidth on

a screenshot of a conversation on Gmail where the targeted text ads are small, unobtrusive, and actually RELEVANT TO MY LIFE.

If my email provider is going to be giving me a FREE service because it's paid for with ad revenue ... well, I think it's obvious which I'd go with.

Thanks for the congrats!

And yeah, what ScareCrow said about the ads. They're only text ads, which are far less obtrusive than the ads on my Yahoo account. So the only issue for me would be the privacy one, but a computer searches the messages for keywords, not a person, so it's no less secure than any other email client.

And of COURSE I had heard of that, yeesh, it was quite a hubbub when gmail was first announced!

You're just jealous. ;)

Dude, NICE ONE on the raise! You should be pretty proud of yourself. This whole job change was such a good move.

Can you tell me more about Gmail and why it's such a big deal?
Jun. 17th, 2004 07:43 am (UTC)
OH YEAH forgot to mention congrats on the raise! THE MARK OF THE DEVIL RAISE!

PK: If you're not already attending services at the Church of Our Lord and Savior Google then you probably wouldn't care about Gmail that much. Me, being a gigantic fan and supporter of Google - well, the chance to have them handle my email really appealed to me. The really super-basic rundown is as follows:

1.) One free gigabyte of email space. More than I could ever hope to use. Never delete another email for space reasons.
2.) Your email is being held by Google, king of super-redundant hard drives and backups. If there's anyone I trust not to A.) disappear at random or B.) lose my data it's Google.
3.) No folders to store email in. Instead, everything gets labels, and a message can have multiple labels. If I sent you an email about going to the beach you could label it as 'Kevin' and 'Vacation' both.
4.) Amazing search features (of course) within the piles of email you can accumulate.
5.) Super-slick and user-friendly and clean interface.
6.) Tons of other amazing things, including but not limited to a so-far good spam filter, no loading of web bugs, no loading of remote images unless specified, no pop-ups, no graphical ads, 'threaded' conversations, good filters, and on and on and on.

Now, you will hear people talking about the fact that Gmail does targeted email advertisements. You know when you search on Google there's usually a column on the far right of the results page with a few paid ads in a small font? That's what sometimes shows up off to the side of your email. For example, when KT and I were talking about sushi I saw an ad for Kikkoman.com. Stuff like that. Some people that have paranoia complexes say that Gmail is reading your email, which is absurd. Every single email provider in the world has the chance to read your email - you're no better off or worse off with Gmail. They do, however, scan emails for keywords and display targeted advertising. You know, 'cause free email accounts live off of advertising. So, like I said to bigguy above - I'd rather see advertising for something I'm interested in or communicating about instead of ads for home mortgages and college degrees and mobile phone providers I don't use. Please, see the screenshots in my earlier comment for reference.

So... what am I really saying? If you love your email provider, wherever it may be, have fun, enjoy. If you're always looking for the best thing out there (like MEEE!) then check out Gmail. Or ... I guess I should say "beg someone for an invitation" because right now it's still in beta / testing.

man, you qualify as an enthusiast. i've never even thought about email for more than 6 seconds at a time.
