I have been told I drive defensively, possibly TOO offensively, but I use my blinkers ALL THE TIME and for EVERYTHING! I use them in PARKING LOTS!

I try to use them in parking lots too, because there are lots of pedestrians.

I lived on a very quiet street growing up, so when cars came up the hill to my street, they wouldn't bother using their signals, because there weren't any other cars in sight. But HELLO there were KIDS on BIKES who want to know where you are going so that we don't sit there waiting just so that we can watch you go the other way and be totally undangerous to us.

So now I try to use my blinker always always always. Except maybe this case.

Also I never go anywhere without putting on a seatbelt, even in parking lots, because people don't pay a lot of attention in parking lots.

I always use my seatbelt too, because I just never understood why you wouldn't. Really, why wouldn't you, right? Maybe if you were pregnant or sumthin'. I just feel they are comfortable, easy, available... If you get into an accident and die, all anyone will say is "s/he wasn't wearing a seatbelt"... I mean, all signs point to SEATBELT.

i think it would depend on who has the right of way coming the opposite direction. like if the people coming from the right fork had a stop sign, then i would signal to turn right to let them know that they don't have to wait for me to pass. otherwise i wouldn't signal...cause i'm not really turning...

I'm there with you. I can't think of a fork where it isn't actually a road intersecting with another road. So I use a turn signal anytime I'm turning on or off of a road, but not if I'm continuing on a road where I have right of way.

As I said to Steve above . . . it's not really possible for the road you're on to continue to the right, because then in order to bear left you'd have to give way to oncoming traffic coming from the right, and then I wouldn't really consider that to be a "fork" in the road, just a side street intersecting at an angle.

But I should have been more clear in my question, I suppose.

How could the people coming from the left have a stop sign? Then it wouldn't really be a fork in the road, because you wouldn't have the right of way if you wanted to bear left.

I guess I should have included that in the question, that you have the right of way no matter which direction you choose.

well, okay, i guess i still consider that a fork..like new freedom road between tansboro and berlin. there's a fork to the left for watsontown road (that ice cream place is on the wedge) that has a stop sign.

maybe that's technically not a fork, but ask anyone and i'd bet they'd call it that...

It's hard to remember what I do in that situation, because I'm usually high out of my mind when I drive.

we've got this road here that kinda does what you are saying...if i understand it right. this road curves to the left and there is a road that has a stop sign that intersects it in a Y-kinda way. if you are going down the main road, you have the right of way to continue on the road (which curves to the left), and the right of way to go off onto the new road (which in reality would just be coninuing straight). I always use my blinker when in this situation b/c that way the other people stopped know they can turn on to the road if I'm going off onto their road and that they should wait, if i decide to follow my road...

My left hand is much too busy with flipping the bird to actuate the turn signal.

If it is a standard "Y" shaped fork then you really shouldn't have to use turn signals at all, as long as you are in the right, er, I mean, correct lane before you get to the point of divergence.

If it is a "T" shaped fork then, turn signals apply for both turns, but are not necessary as, I presume, the driver is in the correct lane already.

Also, blinkers may be for driving-challenged, but I feel a certain amount of pride in using them, even if there is no one behind me for miles.

i don't think i'm EXACTLY clear on the road scenario you are describing, but i can put it simply, i think. i'd use my turn signal if i were turning off of the road that i was currently on. if i'm clearly remaining on the same road, even if that road curves & intersects with another road, i wouldn't use a blinker.
