Ah, the endless possibilities

Okay, so now what do I do?

I'm young and jobless and have a tiny bit of cash. The lease on my apartment is now on a month-to-month basis, so I can leave whenever I please. I have no kids, no husband, no boyfriend even. Just a stupid cat. Who can be dealt with if necessary. I have a car payment and a student loan, but no real financial obligations besides those.

Should I get a regular engineering job? Or should I do something fun and exciting? What about joining the army, or the navy or something? I would get to see the world. Or should I move to the Caribbean and become a barmaid? Or move to California and become . . . an engineer still? Or a barmaid? Should I just take off across the country, washing dishes here and there to pay for my meals? Should I move to Japan? No, that sounds foolish. What about Australia? What about Amsterdam? Marijuana and prostitutes notwithstanding, Amsterdam is a wonderful city that I love to death. And my wallet and passport were stolen in Amsterdam, so you'd think that I'd hate it, but I don't! What kind of job could I get in Amsterdam? Don't say working in the Red Light District.

What outrageous dreams do YOU have? Can I steal them?

I've always wanted to be a lion tamer. Or tigers, whatever, as long as they're big cats. Or I could move to Florida and work with sea lions, I like sea lions as well.

Or how about a stewardess? Would I get to see the world as a stewardess, or just a lot of hotels? Someone suggested the Peace Corps, but I'm not sure that's my steez. Too much . . . do-goodery.

So what? What?

I always wanted to be a cross-country truck driver - even wrote a paper about it. Unfortunately, you have to be at least 5'2". You can steal that dream if you like because I don't fit the requirements.

Move somewhere with a river that doesn't completely suck, get a decent but easygoing job, and get a houseboat. Or become a private investigator. Or go from town to town on foot, fighting crime and being provided for by the people you help. Or drive a school bus. I think the houseboat one is a good idea.

Well, you COULD work the Red Light District in Amsterdam...

Aside from that, my dream was to get a research position at Bell Labs, but I don't think that's exactly what you had in mind...

Now would definitely be the best time to move somewhere exotic... just make it some place other than California, that's been done. The problem is, the most "exotic" places are usually the ones that are hardest to get by in without money.

Anything else you've ever dreamed of doing? 3 month road trip around the country? Starting your own business? Becoming a full-time drug dealer? Moving to the city (either Philly or NY)? Obviously, we'd prefer it if you stayed local... but if you have to leave for a couple months, we'd understand. Also, if you're looking for a real engineering job, I know Lockheed Martin is hiring a ton of people, but I don't know if they use Civil Engineers for anything.

Isn't Lockheed Martin evil? I don't know anything about 'em, it's just the vibe I've always gotten.

You should totally move to Amsterdam but NOT work in the red light district. I fucking love that town too, and it's all nice and you get to ride a bike everywhere. And there's filthy rivers everywhere, and windmills and awesoem food everywhere. Maybe you could be an engineer there- they have engineers in Amsterdam, right?

They must have a bunch of civil engineers in that area, to work on the dykes...

Which is right in Washu's line of work, and dovetails nicely with the red light district...
