On Christmas my dad rented The Cup on DVD. Usually in order for my brother and I, my parents, and my grandparents to all enjoy a movie, we have to go the Disney route. This time my dad went on the advice of Roger Ebert. Score!

It was watched mostly by my brother, me, my dad, and my grandpa. Mom and Grandma were in the kitchen preparing dinner and just generally futzing around. At first it seemed as though The Cup was going to be a bomb: it was in (I think) Chinese with subtitles, and about Tibetian monks and football, and by football I boviously mean "soccer". At first my dad and brother seemed bored, and my grandfather seemed turned off by all the Foreigners in it and their "bad" acting. But the main kid was good, and it got funny, and -- get this -- no lessons! No moral or anything! And I didn't learn a damn thing about Tibetian monks, except that they really, really like football and are a lot less pious than you'd think, when they're young, anyway. Oh, and the reason that monks have shaved heads is so that their elders can rub them affectionately. Really.
