Tonight I have to orgasmizize all of my .mp3's, so I'm trying to come up with a logical way to file them. How do you orgasmizize the .mp3's on YOUR computer?

Don't all those crazy mp3 programs do it for you, and then you just click a button and it does 'em by genre or artist or title or year or whatever?

I thought that was how it all worked.

Well, MusicMatch does, by file tag , but I'm considering hopping on the WinAmp bandwagon . . . I guess I was more inquiring about folders people had, different categories and whatnot.

I organize them in alphabetical volume order.

Can you do me a favor and spare me the naked back icon when you post where I'm going to see you? Thanks.

(I'm going to embarrass myself here, I know it.)

I have one folder for all the random stuff. You know, stuff that's good, but isn't from an album or anything (or one in which I don't have the full album in mp3). Then there's an Incoming folder, where I put everything that's just been downloaded.

I've got another where I put full albums. Within, I've got folders with individual artists' names, and then in those are folders of albums. The album titles are preceded by date, to make it easier to find stuff.

I have to do this to my mp3 collection because I've got a whole lot of them. Fifteen gigs worth, anyway.

Why is that embarassing? That's not embarassing at all.

The year before album title -- brilliant. I'm stealing that.

So say you have a single Busta Rhymes song that you stole from the internet -- you put that in your "random" folder, rather than loose in your "Bus-A-Bus" folder? I guess that works, I mean I guess I wouldn't really "forget" if I had the song singly or on an album.

And your artists aren't organized according to genre at all? I guess mostly what I'm looking for here is genre-title inspiration. You know, so I have like five to ten categories, instead of "Death-Thrash-Grind-Punk-Metal" with only one album in it. Not that I listen to shit like that, but you know, just as an ee to the jizzee.

Man, what I wouldn't pay for a death-thrash--grind-punk-metal band, much less a folder for multiple bands.

Hey, have you seen this? I thought I was pretty cool when I made it up.

Yeah. Single songs go into the random folder, so you'd take "Busta Rhymes - I Have Speech Problems (live, acoustic).mp3" and stick that in there. If I've got a huge amount of songs by one artist that still don't make up any albums, I might make a folder specifically for that artist and stick all their stuff in there. I've had to do that for Coil and Soul Coughing.

Oh! And I've got a folder for soundtracks. And another for mods and s3ms and its, but that's all oldschool computer nerd stuff.

Nah, I don't do any genre categorizing. It's all just names.

a lot of work
I had a friend who did it basically the same way, but because he also wanted genre grouping he made sym-links, or shortcuts, to all the songs in a genre-based classification... But this seems to me like a lot of extra work.

Oh. And "By Date" I mean, the year that the album came out.

Top level- by genre
Second level- by artist

I don't ever have enough MP3s to need sub-folders under each artist. And if I have individual cuts from random people I don't really listen to, they just get thrown in the bin for that genre.

What are your genres? That's where my real question is, I think.

In my case, usually:

Jazz-Big Band
Jazz (everything with less than 5 people)
Drum Corps
"Pop" (anything contemporary, including rap, rock, etc.)

Which probably isn't really helpful for anyone else.
