So, you particularly want one choice above all others, or do we get to submit composite answers?

Nope, just one choice. I want to be happy AND be good AND understand, and I imagine many other people do too. I'm interested in knowing people's priorities.

I say, first priority, put on a good show. It's cool being good and all, but it's better to be good while demonstrating conflict -- keeps the ratings high.

I put understanding somewhat lower, because it can be used for greater good, but at the same time, it's also key in manipulation. After all, with great power comes great responsility, and other such moralistic axioms that can be learned from comic books. The application of the understanding would be more important, and there we go back to the "good or not" portions...

Happiness I would have to put, significance-wise, pretty darn low. I think there's about as much chance of the meaning of life being "to be happy" as there is of it being "to scratch one's self thoroughly each morning." It may happen, and, by golly, if you're that determined, I say go for it, but I strongly doubt that would ever be handed out as a life mission.

Isn't that assuming that someone's handing out the missions?

And besides, MY god wants me to be happy. No, really.

Well, okay, yes, the previous meaning of life is assuming that there is a governing intelligence of some sort handing out the missions, otherwise the concepts of "good" or "happy," or even "meaning" are meaningless in their entirety, and what "meaning" there would be to life would have to boil down to chemical reactions, to wit, the one thing that all life aspires to: the persistence thereof. If the bloodlines continue, then everybody scores one hundred percent whether you're a dick or sad or happy or whatever.

Which, you know, that's easy enough, but even if that turns out to be how it is, I've never found it real satisfactory.

If you do good, it may make you happy. But, you'll never be happy ALL the time, that's impossible. Understanding is for the birds. I don't think we can ever understand everything.

Ahh, the meaning of life, answered in Live Journal. How zen!

Ill scientist: thumbs down for trying to cheat. I said ONE answer.

And I disagree that all three are the same. Sure, they're related, but . . . well, let's say that I come to a decision that must be made, and I have two options. One will screw me, but make someone else happy. The other will make me happy, but screw the other person. Of course I will get some happiness from making someone else happy, but not as much as I would get from making the selfish choice.

And I argue that trying real hard to understand, instead of just accepting and being happy, is . . . is a thing.

HIPPIE
but you see how understanding makes that situation that much easier to accept, and to come to terms with, and ultimately you can be happier either way, if you understand better.

further, i'd argue that understanding is something that you don't have to work at, it's something you just get. you just have to be receptive to it.

i mean yo, i realize that what makes the question interesting is the fact that there's no good right answer. i understand that. i just can't come up with a good answer under these circumstances- i can't pick one, because i think they're all too related. i mean, when i understand things then i am happy and i can act most truthfully and for the best of everybody involved. life's a cooperative effort based on understanding. dig?

Actually, I lied. The three greatest things in life are to crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of the women.

I forgot about those. Jon's right.

If I crushed my enemies, the women would be rejoicing.

Hey bigtoe250, I don't understand what you mean by "to believe". Can you elaborate? Specifically, my questions are: Believe in what? And how do you make that your life's goal?

when i said 'to believe', i didn't mean it in a very vague way, nor was it meant to be interpreted that way. what i mean is, 'the hardest thing in this world is to live in it'. to get through the day, to pass every moment, to struggle through every hardship, and to rejoice in every victory...you must believe in something. believe in it so blindly that your existence depends on it. if you don't truly believe in something; you'll never laugh, you'll never cry, you'll never hurt, and you'll never love. bottom line is, you'll never really be living.

so what is your belief, Hal? Love, Religion, Sleep....?

Just curious. I'm not sure if I agree with you, but I understand your point, and I want PERSONAL ELABORATION.

honestly...i believe that i have a supportive family, fantastic group of friends, and a beautiful and loving wife-to-be. not only that, i believe that any one of them would be by my side in my darkest hour. knowing (believing) that makes life much more enjoyable in the good times and bearable in the bad. they make life worth living.

To qed: okay, good answer. Here's my follow-up, then: what is your own personal goal along the way?
qed
Feb. 12th, 2002 11:50 am (UTC)
Ummm... to attempt to reproduce as often as possible. With as many women as possible.

I have a lot of personal goals. I guess you could say that I have goals because reaching goals makes me happy. Maybe I just get bored too easily without goals. Either way, I don't think they really have any particular meaning.

What I can say is: "The purpose of my life is to be the best person I can be." I don't know if that's the meaning of my life or not, and I couldn't even tell you what "best person I can be" means, but that's the direction of my life.
